Planting wild heather at New Lount Reserve
March 2013

A group of 16 children and some teachers from Newbold C of E Primary School joined with The Coleorton & New Lount Volunteer Group to plant wild heather plants at New Lount Nature Reserve. The heather plants were supplied by LCC Country Parks Department and LCC's Senior Range, David Luther joined the groups to supervise operations.

The children planted around 50 heather plants in two protected areas as part of a trial to establish if wild heather will grow in the open grassland of the site. If the trial is successful it is hoped that a heath land habitat can be developed in this part of the site, which will increase the site's biodiversity. In what was a cold but sunny afternoon the children planted the small heather plants and assisted the Volunteer Group to erect a protective fence around the two areas, thus protecting the young plants from the rabbits in this part of the site. The children will be monitoring the progress of these heather plants together with members of the Coleorton & New Lount Volunteer Group.
